Ahoy There!

The new Pirates of the Caribbean theme has launched in Toys R Us stores in the USA, and the microsite at LEGO.com has been updated with all the sets and other content. Interestingly, the former “Captain’s Cabin” set seems to have been renamed 4191 Zombie Pirates. Scratch that, LEGO have changed it back.

While some of us (ahem, me) just sit around waiting for these new sets to appear in Australia, Eurobricks forum member dotmike used the clever ploy of printing out barcodes for these sets from the net, and then scanning these codes at an Australian Toys R Us, Target & Big W to see if they were in the system yet. Sure enough, the scanners obliged!

Here’s a summary of the new sets using dotmike’s RRPs and info from the US Shop@Home:

Set Aust. RRP Pieces Minifigs Per Piece
4181 Isla de Muerta 39.99 152 4 0.26
4182 The Cannibal Escape 59.99 279 4 0.22
4183 The Mill 79.99 365 4 0.22
4191 Captain’s Cabin 24.99 94 3 0.27
4192 Fountain of Youth 39.99 125 3 0.32
4193 The London Escape 99.99 462 5 0.22
4194 Whitecap Bay 139.99 745 6 0.19
4195 Queen Anne’s Revenge 199.99 1094 7 0.18

Is it me or do these prices seem somewhat overinflated, almost Lucas-tax-like? Must be the new Disney-tax.

Are you excited for Pirates of the Caribbean? When do you think it will arrive on our shores?

UPDATE: The Mr Toys/Toyworld website has LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean down for a 15 May release. Thanks to Jamie for the tip!

No surprises to see that again, we Australians are getting ripped off. Seriously Lego, the price disparity between us and the US is becoming a joke……

  2. PotC is being released in May along with the new Cars/Cars 2 sets. No exact street date though.

  3. Peter Smith says:

It’s another Big Name Brand, which means we’ll be paying for the name rather than the pieces. Wait until they’re on sale, I think that’s about all we can do.

  4. Ruby says:

Hmm… In my humble opinion I think the sets look rather weak – there’s no substance to them! At least the Indiana Jones series had vehicle based sets – these are for the most part, all ‘scenes’ – even the Queen Anne seems all show no go. Now I won’t even have a excuse – it’ll bs obvious I’m buying a set for the Jack Sparrow minifig alone! :P

  5. Birgoyle says:

I think PotC will go the way of all non Star Wars or Harry Potter licensed themes – straight to the Bargain Bins within a few months…

Indiana Jones, Toy Story, Prince of Persia… Let’s not even mention SPEED RACER….

If it ain’t “the boy who lived” or “may the force be with you” then the theme is licensed to… fail :-)

  6. Peter Smith says:

That is a point. It’s the low-quality of the sets combined with the high prices makes them risky right from the get-go.

Heck, even the first few SW and HP sets were poor but expensive. And yeah, didn’t the Speed Racer sets vanish without a trace?

With the PotC stuff, it’s the pieces and, to a lesser extent, the minifigs that I’m interested in. I’d love to have a few of those bottle-pieces (with the ship inside), or the glob, or the mermaids, or things like that. But the actual sets, not so much — although I think you could do something with the building in “The London Escape”.

  7. Angry Brick Fan says:

39.99 FOR THE ISLA DE MUERTA!?! That’s insane. Absolutely insane… I’ve tolerated LEGO’s insane price gouging for a while, but this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back – who pays $40 for four minifgures and a tiny island!?!

  8. Ruby says:

If anyone is interested – for those with a US parcel forwarding service, or friends/family over there, TRU US online has all sets bar Queen Anne for buy one get 50% off one – which makes them a little better priced, though you would have to factor in shipping. If they’d had the Queen Anne that’s what I’d have done…. The rest of the sets are pitiful. Also, wouldn’t it have been smarter to make a few more ship sets?

  9. Stacy says:

The 10210 Imperial Flagship is worth the same money as Queen Anne. The flagship is far better looking, and has 600+ pieces more. Unbelievable rip off.

  10. Charlie says:

I only want a Jack Sparrow minifig for my collection. Won’t be wasting $$$$ on the sets themselves. Sorry Lego, but I just can’t afford your prices anymore.

  11. Hemish says:

I’ll get a mate from the US to get em for me and post them over

  12. Charlie says:

I’ll wait till the polybag sets are available and then order on Bricklink. Can get some wonderful bargains on there.

  13. Nicko says:

I saw the news sets tonight @ Doncaster shopping town @ Toys R US.

  14. LegoFan says:

Spotted four of the PotC sets in my local TRU this evening.

    4182 The Cannibal Escape 59.99
    4183 The Mill 79.99
    4192 Fountain of Youth 39.99
    4193 The London Escape 99.99

I am a toyworld retailer. The costs price of this lego is significantly high hence the higher retail than what should be. There is less profit margin than other legos so it must be a disney tax or lego capatlizing on the fact that we retailers would order it and bumping up there price. They are also doing the black pearl in lego to be released at toyworlds in november. just for christmas at a retail of 169.99

  16. LegoFan says:

Hey Todd, thanks for the news on the potc black pearl.

Just want to know whether your toyworld will stock 8678 Ultimate Build Francesco. When and how much?

    Thanks

  17. Todd says:

hey lego fan the 8678 isn’t on my order form. it looks like an exclusive cars lego not in the normal range.
we get exclusives that no other retailers get and i think mine are only the winter toy shop and the bakery i do not have my papers infront to see. the other retailers get a exclusive or a few exclusives as well.

  18. LegoFan says:

Thanks Todd. Do you still have Winter Toy Shop on sale? If so, do you shipped to Sydney and how much would it cost (including postage)
